‘Hints & Tips’ to stay safe in cold Winter weather:

Here are our hints and tips to help keep both service users and staff stay safe and warm in the cold Winter months. Please see below for further details:

For our care workers:

  • Have your car serviced and check your tyres (many garages do free winter safety checks!).
  • Be prepared! Remember to check out local news/travel bulletins and be aware of road conditions, have an alternative route in mind in case you are unable to go your usual way.
  • Keep your fuel tank as full as you can (you may need to run the engine to keep warm).
  • Take a warm drink in a flask and some snacks to eat.
  • Ensure you have warm clothes, a blanket and a torch with you-just in case!
  • Wear warm/sensible footwear.
  • Keep your windows and mirrors clear and make sure you have good visibility BEFORE you set off…remember to remove any snow from your roof and bonnet as well. Keep a de-icer spray or/and scraper with you at all times.
  • Keep your mobile phone fully charged… it can be a long walk to use a land line.
  • Carry a piece of carpet and shovel when snow is imminent to help you get out if you get stuck (running over      carpet will provide grip).
  • Remember conditions can worsen quickly it might be sunny when you set off but there could be six inches of snow by the end of your shift.
  • Lastly, if you are stuck in the bad weather let someone know where you are.

For our service users:

  • Keep your bedroom at a minimum of 18 degrees Centrigrade at night & close your bedroom window on cold nights. (The room you are occupying in the day time should be no less than 21 degrees centigrade).
  • Make sure your central heating system has been serviced/chimney swept.
  • Wear several thin layers of clothing-lots of thin layers will keep you warmer than just one thick layer.
  • Use a hot water bottle or wheat bag to warm your bed (do not use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket as this can be dangerous).
  • Have regular warm drinks and warm foods such as soup. Try to make sure you have at least one hot main meal per day. Use flasks and thermal cups to keep drinks warm.
  • Keep basic food items in stock in the cupboards or freezer. This will ensure you have sufficient in should the weather take a turn for the worse and make it impossible for anyone to get to the shop.
  • If you go out be sure to dress for the weather and wear a hat, scarf & gloves.
