Profile - Support worker, Beth Monroe

'I joined WarrenCare in October 2011 as a Support Worker working with children and adults with learning and physical disabilities.

I heard about the role through a friend who had told me about how rewarding the job is. I completed my application form and was contacted within a few days and invited for an interview. I was absolutely terrified just having to attend an interview, let alone have a go at a job I had never done before! But the interview really helped to give me more of an insight into the role and the lady in HR was really nice and put me at ease.

I couldn't believe it when I got a phone call the next day telling I had been successful. I was nervous but excited. I attended my 5 day Induction training the following week and had so much fun. The trainer was great, really supportive and made adaptations for my individual needs. The training facilities were really good and had moving and handling equipment in the room with us, including a bed so we could actually carry out the practical techniques that we would need to use. I felt equipped with the knowledge and confidence to go and support people.

After my training was complete I had to wait a week until my references and CRB came back. I then came to the office to meet my managers and get started. My line manager spent ages with me, telling me about my particular service users and their likes/dislikes, what activities I should encourage, the times and days I would be working etc. She arranged for me to shadow another member of staff on my first day so I knew what I was supposed to do.

A few months in I now have a handful of regular service users who I see each week and have built up excellent relationships so far and feel proud to be giving vulnerable people a quality of life they may not otherwise experience. In such a short time I can see a real difference in some service users and that is so rewarding. I am looking forward to what the future brings and how I can further develop with WarrenCare.'
